After the first chapter of The Pearl I know what one of the major themes is going to be. The main character Kino, is a father who loves his child. And because he is native, he is often shunned of many things. When his child is near death and the doctor refuses to help the child, Kino get angry. He stands in front the doctors door, waiting. When his boy dies he gets angry and splits his knuckles on the door. This made me realize one of the major themes will be wealth. Because Kino and his family aren't wealthy he does to get his right of way. And due to his poorness, his little boy died. I can already tell The Pearl by John Steinbeck is going to be an intense and interesting book.
