Terror of war
I regain control of myself, but have suddenly become so feeble that I cannot any more lift my hand against him. ~ All Quiet on the Western Front, Chapter 9
The most horrible thing in the world, is war. While fighting in the war, Paul sees why war is terrifying. The author uses vivid description to bring the terror of war to life. The author captures the details and makes you feel like you are really there, fighting in the war. The author is trying to put you in the main characters shoes, and he does a very good job using words that make you feel the guilt and hardship of war.
During the day, while fighting in the trenches, Paul stumbles upon a enemy soldier. Without thinking he stabs the man and almost ends his life. Paul made a decision that would haunt his life and change his thoughts on the war.
"I make no decision—I strike madly at home, and feel only how the body suddenly convulses, then becomes limp, and collapses. When I recover myself, my hand is sticky and wet. The man gurgles. It sounds to me as though he bellows, every gasping breath is like a cry, a thunder—but it is not only my heart pounding. I want to stop his mouth, stuff it with earth, stab him again, he must be quiet, he is betraying me; now at last I regain control of myself, but have suddenly become so feeble that I cannot any more lift my hand against him.” ~ All Quiet on the Western Front, Chapter 9
This piece effected me because it showed me how terrible war really is. It made me feel sad, heartbroken, and empathic towards soldiers fighting in the war. It challenges me to think about life differently and how we have so much. It made me realize to sept back and be thankful for the things I have. This book reminded me of The Hunger Games, because of the gory and sad feeling the author made you feel. All Quiet on the Western Front is a great novel that shows the hardships of war. It will make you reflect on the stuff you have and how much you should appreciate it. It is a good descriptive book that is fun to read, but at the same time teaches you a lesson and changes your view on many things you have in life.
"I take out my cigarettes, break each one in half and give them to the Russians. They bow to me and then light the cigarettes." [All Quiet on the Western Front, Chapter 8]
The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy. In chapter 8 of All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul is full of empathy towards the Russian soldiers. Empathy is something that you cannot control. It is a gift that makes people sympathize and help out others in need. In chapter 8 of All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque, Paul experiences empathy in a great way. When Russian soldiers are prisoners of German camps, Paul feels bad for them, as any normal human would. During Paul's shift of watching the prisoners, he does something that would make other German soldiers angry.
“I take out my cigarettes, break each one in half and give them to the Russians. They bow to me and then light the cigarettes. Now red points glow in every face. They comfort me; it looks as though there were little windows in dark village cottages saying that behind them are rooms full of peace.” [All Quiet on the Western Front, Chapter 8]
This quote shows that just because you are fighting against someone, you can also be nice. Paul sees the poor state of the soldiers and wants to make their lives better. He feels empathetic towards them. His empathy turns the mood of the Russian's around. Paul feels especially empathetic towards the soldiers because it might be him in their situation later on in the war. Treat others the way you would like to be treated, is a common saying and Paul had that saying in mind when he handed the Russian's the cigarette. Be nice.
“We have seen nothing like it for years, nothing like it for happiness, beauty and joy. That is peacetime, that is as it should be; we feel excited.”
-Chapter 7, All Quiet on the Western Front
Having fun can turn the worst day of your life, into the best. In Chapter 7 of, All Quiet on the western front, the soldiers find that having fun can make your forget about how you have to risk you life on a daily basis. As they went out for a swim one night they met some girls. They invited them into their home which made the troops forget about the hardships of war, and they had some fun. After swimming by the army camp, they went back happy because they had been invited into the home of 3 Beautiful women. That night they would swim over and find the house. This was fun and exciting for the troops, which made their day more fun and relaxing.
“The other two are now on the scene, the door opens and the light floods over us. They recognize us and all three burst into laughter at our appearance. They rock and sway in the doorway, they laugh so much. How supple their movements are.”
This shows while they are risking their lives and fighting in the war, one thing can make their day better. That one thing is happiness. When they finally meet up with the women they met at the shore, they were not thinking about war, they were having fun. The whole night could have been occupied by thoughts of war and death, but they were full of thoughts of happiness and laughter. You can never have to much fun.
On Sunday I went to a high school skate. Basically it was just some ice time to scrimmage and have a fun time. It was really hard because the kids were older and stronger. Some were seniors that could skate around everyone. They had been playing on the Varsity team for years and knew the coaches and players well. It was fun to play with older kids and I had a great time. Durring the first hour we scrimmaged. I hockey the best thing to do is scrimmage because it is the most in-game drill. You feel like you are playing a game just against your friends, so to be able to do that for an hour was really fun. There was one player who really stuck out. His name was John and we was a senior. He had been on the team for a while and could skate around everybody. Halfway through he took to the back of the net and started to skate up the ice. He blew by two offecive players, and then passed the puck to himself to get around another. Then he finished it off with a laser shot top right. The skate was really fun and I enjoyed skating with some high school hockey players. It was really cool and fun to me because I got to play with older and better players.
On Saturday we went to the Acton field and had another game. They were a tough team and again we had a hard time playing against them. They had one midfielder who was strong and fast. They would give the ball to him and he would dodge and score. Then after we realized we had to shut him down we started to score some goals. After the second half we lost the game by a couple goals. But overall we played a good game.
On Friday I had a Concord Carslile lacrosse game. I like playing for CC because its fun and not competitive. During our game we started to a slow start. The team was very good at face offs, so we had to play defense for most of the first half. After the first half he started to pick it up. We won some face offs and started to posses the ball in our offensive end. After we scored a couple goals we started to comeback. In the last five minutes we tried to come back but we couldn’t. It was a tough loss but we had another game the next day.
The hockey playoff are finally here but for Boston fans it's not to exciting. Boston did not make the playoff this year and will not be in the race of the cup. My favorite to win in the Saint Louis Blues. They don't have that good of a reputation in the past but in recent years they have been picking it up. Also I think the team that will be playing them in the finals is Tamp Bay. And that's how I think the NHL playoffs will go.
Spring days are not always fun. Today after a long day of school we had a lacrosse game. Don't get me wrong, I love lacrosse. But when it is so hot and the sun is beaming down on you it is hard to play your best. But today we played hillside, a strong team. They had some fast kids and one kids who they would give the ball to and he would run through everybody. So by halftime we made a game plan to shut him off, so he wouldn't get the ball. We ended up winning by one, 8-7. We played great and in the end we won.
Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.
Having fun is as essential as drinking water. It was a week into the 8th grade and I was already sick of it. Every night I would go home and look forward to playing lacrosse and watching TV. But this year it was different. This year was going to be stressful, hard, and boring. As I get home from school after a long day I wonder to myself, how could I release my stress and have fun. Having fun is important going through life. Without having fun your life is dull and boring. If you want to have fun you have to let go once in a while, you can't just do the same thing every day. When your are having fun you are enjoying yourself and that's what makes for a good and inspiring life.
As I finish a boring all school meeting, my friends and I decide to have some fun during recess. Instead of just staying inside, like we usually do, we go outside and play football. As we're walking outside we question our decision. We questioned if we were going to have fun. But once we got out to the field we found that it was going to be a great time. As I was playing that football game, I realized that school doesn't have to be boring and dull, it could be fun. We tossed the ball for a while and had a great time. I realized that having fun during school was a better way to get through the day and that I didn't always have to be bored during school. The best thing you can do is have fun, if you want to get through something boring just have some fun and time will fly.
Dont just do it, do it right!
Give one hundred percent, one hundred percent of the time!
As I flipped the first page, I knew that this was going to be a long, hard, challenging book. All alone I sat in the chair by my desk, reading endless pages of writing. And this was not any old writing, it was crafted like a poem and written a long time ago, so it was hard to understand the words. I would have to stop read just so I could look up what the words meant. I was only on the seventh book and I was already falling asleep. I didn't think I could go on so I started to skim through the final pages of the seventh book. I didn't highlight or take any notes, I just skimmed through the pages. Then I turned off the light and went to bed. As I walked into class the next day I knew I had made a huge mistake. I didn't know that it was going to be a big deal, I just thought that I would get through class without and problem. But when I got to class I learned to read the book, not just scan through it. I learned to just power through and get it done, if your going to do something do it right. I sat down at the table, and had no idea what was going on. I had been given a task and I didn't complete it.
During the class we talked about the names and who was in the book. Whenever I was asked a question it was easy to tell that I didn't read the book. I would get called on, but I could never answer the question. I quickly scanned through the chapter summery but still didn't get it. That was the one thing that could be my helper, but it failed me. The only thing I could do is sit through the class. I was being tested with questions, but I couldn't answer any of them. I had no idea what to do. I knew this was going to be a low point in my reading, so the next day I had to bounce back. I knew after this low point and I had to come back the next day even stronger.
As I went home that day I opened my book to book 8. I turned on the listening and really absorbed the chapter. But half way through I didn't know I could go on, I don't have the attention span to sit and read a book for an hour. So I found something to help me. I went to the chapter summaries and read the first half. This helped me really understand what had been happening through the first half of book 8, it was a huge helper throughout my challenge. It allows me to take a break and keep focus on the book. I though to myself this time, if your going to do it, do it right. So I did do it right. I finished that book, and then read the chapter summary again. Going into class the next day I had a clear understanding of the book. I had won the fight and had something to show for it.
The lesson to me was that if you going to do something, do it right the first time. If you don't your mistakes come back to haunt you. If you have a challenge you don't want to skip over it and then pay for it later, like I did when reading the Odyssey. Lou Holtz once said "life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it." You have to try your hardest and do it right, or you wont succeed. Don't just give half your effort, give all your effort.
Today was a nice spring day. After school I went over to my friends house with one purpose. That purpose was to get a lacrosse net and start to shoot. At first we tried to shovel a section of grass, but we soon realized that under the snow there was ice, so we gave up on that idea. After that we decided to put it in the street. But whenever we would miss the next, the ball would go deep into the snow. And because we used white balls, many of them were lost. We eventually gave up and went inside.
McDonalds has stated that they are going to make some new changes to make their food healthier and better for you to eat. While it may not turn McDonald's food into healthy food, it will make it less bad for your body. One of their first promises was to stop growing their chicken with antibiotics for humans. This makes the chicken get fatter and grow faster so they can produce more chicken. This is a huge deal because McDonald's is one of the biggest chicken buyers in the US, and even though they serve burgers, McDonalds buys more chicken then beef. Another thing they are doing is they are going to give customers the choice to buy milk that is made from cows without artificial growth hormones.
In order for hawks to get their food, they need to fly down and grab it. But there are two different ways predators get their food. There is classical pursuit, when something chases its prey directly behind it and gets it with speed. There is also angle pursuit. This is when it comes at its meal with an angle. This makes it easier for the predator to catch up because it is less distance. The hawks use both. They start with classical pursuit and then switch to angle pursuit and then back to classical pursuit. This is what surprised scientists because usually animals will use only one of those pursuits.
One day David Scott a vault supervisor at a bank in North Carolina made a plan that would change his life forever. He robbed a bank for $17.3 million dollars. David, after he was caught years later, explain how he pulled it off so easily. He worked at the bank and on slow days would be there for hours on end all by himself. He had an idea to rob all of the money from the vault. So he asked his friend to get an armor van so they could get away with the money. The day of the robbery he opened the vault and started to load the van when he realized it was to small. So he had to sort through all the money and take out the ones and fives. Then when they had the van loaded up the lost the key. So they had to break into the van which took them at least 30 minutes. Then they drove away without being scene. But because he was the vault supervisor it raised suspicion and he was arrested years later.
Today after doing the book twenty quiz for the Odyssey Fitz took us downstairs for a surprise. He had us sit on the mats for a couple minutes, I really couldn't tell how long. And then after that he read us a poem. After the peom he told us to turn around on to our stomachs and write a journal entry without talking to anybody. I think this was an exercise to help us focus while we write. The silence let us zone In and then do some writing. I think he did this because they only other time you are completely still during the day is when you are sleeping. This was a different and fun experience. When I go to school I don't expect to be laying down. Think was very different and exciting.
A truck heading to Attleboro was robbed of 4.8 million dollars in gold. At 6:30 the car puled over to the side of the road because of engine problems. The men driving a white van, forced the drives out at gunpoint and then took the 275 pounds in gold. They forced them to lay down on the side of the road and then they tied their hands behind their backs. The robbery took place on I-95 in North Carolina. Although this is a busy road, the rout they were talking was not busy and there were very little, to no cars driving there at that time.
The laser show today was one of the weirdest all school meetings I have ever been to. I was told is was a magic light show. Once it started I relized that is was not meant for our age group. He would just talk about lasers, and then there would be a video about the sun. Also the lasers moved slowly and they would stop, and then start really fast. It's wanst a constant motion. Also the guy talking sounded like he was reading from a scrip. This was not the best assembly.
When skating on my rink today I knew this was perfect. When I'm skating on my rink with my brothers, it is the most fun thing in the world. Even though I can score easily, it is still fun. When I go out there I often need a face mask because it is so cold. Being cold is a small price to pay of playing hockey. My rink also has really good ice because my dad puts water over it constantly. I is awesome because it makes the ice smooth and slippery.
When me and Charlie finished our projects there were some things that went well, and some that did not. The good things about our video was how informative it was. We clearly stated what part of the literary analysis we were talking about. We would use certain emojis to represent what part we were talking about. There were also some things we could have done better. While most of our recordings were good, some were fuzzy and hard to listen to. Also our background music was to loud and interfered with our recordings. Another thing we could have done better is use some video and more engaging pictures to keep the audience. Erik and Tyden did a great job with filming so the audience was constantly paying attention. If ours was more like that, we would have had a perfect video.
Most people don't like sundays because there is school the next day. I totally agree with that, but I like sundays for some reasons and hate them for others. I like them because I get to sleep in late, go to my hockey game, and then come back home and go to sleep. Usually I'll blow off some homework and get into bed really early. After all sundays can be good.
For my final term I want photo for my art. Photo seems pretty fun and relaxing. You just have to take pictures and then present them. It sounds like a lot of fun especially when you are taking the pictures. You just get to go outside and take pictures. Whats more chill then that? Hopefully the teacher is an easy grader.
